Doughnut Test :)

DCX 132

The task was for us to decide the mark under PRESENTATION. The marks will be upon 3. Basically what we will be looking for are:
  • Serving size (1 mark)
  • Serving plate (1 mark)
  • Garnishing / Topping (1 mark)
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 1 (appropriate plate used)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 0 (topping okay, garnishing is scattered)
  • Total Mark: 2
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 0 (plate not suitable for teenager)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 1 (topping okay)
  • Total Mark: 2
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 1 (appropriate plate used)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 1 (garnishing compliment doughnut)
  • Total Mark: 3
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 0 ( not appropriate plate used, oval plate with round doughnut)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 0 (not appropriate used of garnishing)
  • Total Mark: 1
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 1 (appropriate plate used)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 1 (simple and nicely decorated)
  • Total Mark: 3
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 0 (plate to small to accommodate the size of doughnut)(doughnut chucking out of the plate, not appealing)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 1 (tried to garnish with raisin)
  • Total Mark: 2
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 1 (appropriate plate used)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 0 (tomato does not compliment with doughnut, if possible not to put any garnish)
  • Total Mark: 2
  • Serving size = 0 (serving too much for one person)
  • Serving plate = 1 (appropriate plate used)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 1 ( topping is fine, however white doily place can be on different colour plate)
  • Total Mark: 2
  • Serving size = 1 (serve one person)
  • Serving plate = 0 (not appropriate plate used)
  • Garnishing / Topping = 1 (glazing attracts)
  • Total Mark: 2

This are my first initial thought on marking the presentation perspective of the product. However when Ms Chin discuss with us on each of the doughnut. I come to conclusion that when we are giving marks try not to find the mistakes that the student does but instead look out where marks can be given. The students had done their part to make and decorate their product, but maybe due to lack of interest, the end product id not what we expect it to be.

here are some thoughtful ideas that i get from Ms Chin:
  • do not find students fault or mistakes, instead help them get the mark
  • tell students to , "Server the best"
  • try to be flexible to your students
  • helping them to decorate is not an issue
  • let them know that no garnish is better than with wrong garnish

23rd September 2010 Part 2

DCX 131

Besides Pepsi Challenge, there are 5 more activities that done by each group on that day.

Activities are:

This activity required us to pin our nose so that we cant smell any flavour. but the real rationale is basically to know wether or not, our tasting ability is strong enough or not. it is an interesting though. and when they put same colouring on all the samples, my perception changed immediately. i though all was actually from any red coloured fruit or vegetable, such a apple, strawberry and tomato. but in fact, when they reveal the answer, one of them is pear! and pear is not red. you can see how perception really affects our smelling ability.

This activity asking us to differentiate the odd one among the three. when you first taste all the sample, you thought they are all from the same source but in fact one of them is not. this is an example of a triangle test which is good to eliminate biasness when doing an experiment.

CHEESE! see the colour between the cheese and the taste which one has more milky flavour. before i taste, i though the one with pale yellow will has more milky taste but when i experiment myself by tasting both of them, i found that the more yellow colour has more milky test! this is when people say. "Dont judge the book by its cover." to relate to this activity, "Don't judge the milkiness of milk bt it colour."

i didn't get the chance to do this activity, but what i understand is that we have to smell different spices "blind fold". but in this activity, the sample itself is blindfold. This is to see whether our smell perception coincide with our own judgement.

i didn't get the chance to try out this activity as well, basically there is 2 sample of same cake but different manufacturer. the task was to differentiate the different texture, smell and taste of these two cakes in comparison with the other.

PEPSI CHALLENGE!

Do you prefer to drink Coke?
or
Do you like Pepsi better?

From the question above, some people really can differentiate the taste of coth coke and pepsi, this might be because they are a BIG FAN of either one of them, but some feels that both coke and pepsi have no difference, they is because they are both black in colour!
this shows that our perception of interpreting what we do plays a major part.

Today's task was to experiment whether personal preference really coincide with preference after tasting both coke and Pepsi. we use random code to note down coke and Pepsi, so that people wont know which one is coke or Pepsi.

So what we did was, we code 344 for Pepsi and 513 for Coke J
know one knows that except us..how cool was that?

From our results...

well some guessed right! thumbs up with who ever is right but some guessed wrong.. don't worry, we shall try another day J

Coke

Pepsi

Preference before tasting

22

6

Random Number Code

513

344

Preference after tasting

19

9

If we are to compare the result from Pepsi, there is only 6 sample size who likes Pepsi more than coke BUT the number increases after tasting!

It was a fun and interactive activity indeed and to know the results is even more fun!
